Before you begin, one story.
When I was eight years old in Belfast, my father read me Churchill's history of the Second World War. I learned the Battle of Britain by heart — the story of a nation that stood when standing looked hopeless. At nine, an immigrant in a new American school, I taught that story to my class.
I have been giving this talk ever since: at West Point, where I taught history to future officers; in wartime Kyiv, where I taught it again while the story happened outside the window; and in a living room in Silicon Valley, to the founders and investors this manifesto is written for.
What follows is that talk, written down — and sharpened by three years of living what it teaches.
The Four Parts
How the West convinced itself war was over, what the Last Supper did to the defense industry, why wars are won by economies — and why they are still decided by humans.
Why the best and brightest of this generation belong in defense: the frontier has moved, the primes won't answer it, and the weight of building for people who love each other enough to die for each other.
